About the Sierra Club...
The Sierra Club is the nation's largest grassroots environmental organization, with over 700,000 members.
Both nationally and locally, the Sierra Club works to preserve America's wild places - and in the meantime, to get out and enjoy those places.
The Kansas City metropolitan area has two groups--the Kanza Group of the Kansas Chapter and the Thomas Hart Benton Group of the Ozark Chapter. Both are involved in legislative issues in Kansas and Missouri, respectively, as well as a host of other activities.
When it comes to outings, the two groups jointly plan a year-round program of day hikes, backpacking trips, trips to interesting local sites, and many other outdoor activities. There is no fee for any Sierra Club outing, although expenses may be shared among trip participants. It is not necessary to be a member to participate in local outings.
You may join online or join by mail. For more information about the Sierra Club, call Craig Wolfe at 913-299-4443 or Melissa Blakley at 816-741-8200. For general outings information, check under Outings, left on the navigation bar, or call outings chairs Steve Hassler at 913-599-6028 or Dave Patton at 816-461-6091.
Or you can come to a meeting. The Kanza Group (Kansas) meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church at 87th & Lowell in Overland Park, KS. The Thomas Hart Benton Group (Missouri) meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Discovery Center, the Missouri Department of Conservation's new Urban Conservation Campus, 4750 Troost, Kansas City, MO.
